Nov 2015 President’s Message

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to personally invite you to our second ‘Community Pharmacy Forum’ to discuss common issues and solutions encountered in the practice of community pharmacy. It is hoped that this will be a recurring meeting of value to those who participate. Our first meeting had an excellent discussion on regulatory and contract compliance issues.

Oct 2015 President’s Message

Dear Colleagues,
Now that summer is over it seems the busy time starts up again… the Pharmacy class of 2019 has started their training and flu vaccination clinics are right around the corner. It has been a privilege to be the SPA President this year.

One of the things that I have noticed is the incredibly high quality of the pharmacists and technicians who I have been able to meet though my involvement with the Association. Continue reading “Oct 2015 President’s Message”

——————————-

Dear SPA members,

Our year is off to a great start with the January Social and I look forward to seeing you at our future events. Last year was a very busy year for our association:

  • It is my honor to thank Manpreet Chahal for his excellent leadership as president last year.
  • We made the transition to a new Executive Vice President Sue Kellogg after honoring Bill Fassett and his wife Sharon for their service.
  • The WSU Marguerite Villars endowed scholarship was established.
  • We have reinvigorated the Fax Blast program.
  • Finally, we have increased our web presence with our new website  and social media https://www.facebook.com/spokanepharmacy.

The SPA board met at our winter retreat this weekend to discuss the upcoming year. It is important to all of us that we are meeting the needs of the local pharmacy community to advance patient care through CE, promotion of competency and increasing the awareness of the pharmacy profession contribution to the health of the community.

You will receive a request to fill out an electronic survey in the near future. It is hoped that you will take the opportunity to provide input on ways that you can be better served by the association. Your ideas and suggestions are most welcome.

I would like to bring to your attention an opportunity to promote the profession through the Patient Access to Pharmacists’ Care Coalition through the link above. They are looking for pharmacists and pharmacies who are interested in advocacy work in support of pharmacist provider status.

Thank you for the excellent work that you do every day!

Chris Greer

Update to Members – August 2014

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE VP

Your Spokane Pharmacy Association Board traditionally takes a break from meeting during the summer months but lots of activity is going on behind the scenes.

The SPA Board of Managers met for their annual retreat in June to set goals and activities for the 2014-2015 membership year. We will be sharing progress with the membership as the year progresses.

One of our important goals for 2012 and 2013 was fulfilled this year–to finish funding the SPA-Marguerite Villars Scholarship fund:

SPA-MARGUERITE VILLARS SCHOLARSHIP

For many decades, the Spokane Pharmacy Association Board of Managers has annually set aside a portion of dues and donations to award an annual scholarship to a WSU pharmacy student. Unfortunately, tuition costs have continued to rise and Association expenses have increased as industry support for CE programs has been restricted.  With the help of the WSU College of Pharmacy, the SPA transferred the scholarship fund into an endowed scholarship named to honor Marguerite Villars, the long-time treasurer of the SPA.  The scholarship was kicked off at the 2011 SPA Banquet by Sue Merk and raised $12,000 of the $25,000 needed.

When Bill Fassett announced his retirement in 2014, he graciously offered to donate any funds raised in honor of his retirement to the scholarship fund.

The SPA is thrilled to announce that at Bill’s retirement celebration during the NW Pharmacy Convention in Coeur d’Alene on May 30, 2014 over $22,000 was raised during an auction and paddle raise to finish funding the scholarship!

A special thank-you needs to go to Linda Garrelts MacLean, Kelly Sylvester and Sue Lutz of the WSU Development & Alumni Relations office, John Oftebro of the WSPA Foundation who served as MC and the many attendees who donated and bid on the items, which included wine collections, golf clubs, gifts and fashion items, Coeur d’Alene lake tours and boat tours of Elliott Bay in Seattle.

The SPA Board of Managers voted at the board retreat in June to support the WSU College of Pharmacy in awarding a second scholarship in 2014 using the extra funds.  The second scholarship will be named to honor Bill and Sharon Fassett.  The SPA Board will be discussing plans for the future to support students both through scholarship support and other activities.

BILL & SHARON FASSETT RETIREMENT & ASSOCIATION CHANGES

As mentioned above, Bill Fassett retired from WSU this year and at the same time, resigned from his position as Executive VP of the SPA.  Sharon Fassett has served as the Webmaster and electronic communication coordinator for the SPA and she has also resigned from that position so that they can enjoy their free time.

Sue Marchi Kellogg agreed to step into the appointment as the Executive VP and Michael Ayres of CHAS is working on the website, contact information and email listings. Currently the website is under construction to update content. We appreciate the patience of all our members as we try to fill the large gap left by the Fassetts. Expect updates to come soon.

The Spokane Pharmacy Association extends their gratitude to the Fassetts for all of their contributions to the Association and wishes them great happiness and success in their well-deserved retirement.
