Every Mother, Every Baby Deserves a Great Start

Since 2004, the number of newborns treated for neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS)—and born dependent on prescription opioids—has increased nearly fourfold. At the same time, women are more likely than men to be prescribed opioid pain medicines, to use them long-term, and to be given higher doses. Your understanding of the safe treatment of chronic pain, including for millions of women of childbearing age, can make a difference.
What you can do to curb the NAS epidemic

  • Join the live TelePain session on June 3 with Dr. Alyssa Stephenson-Famy of the University of Washington as she discusses pain in pregnancy with clinicians around the country.
  • Take the free COPE REMS CME and learn how to safely treat patients dealing with chronic pain, including women of childbearing age.

——————————-

Dear SPA members,

Our year is off to a great start with the January Social and I look forward to seeing you at our future events. Last year was a very busy year for our association:

  • It is my honor to thank Manpreet Chahal for his excellent leadership as president last year.
  • We made the transition to a new Executive Vice President Sue Kellogg after honoring Bill Fassett and his wife Sharon for their service.
  • The WSU Marguerite Villars endowed scholarship was established.
  • We have reinvigorated the Fax Blast program.
  • Finally, we have increased our web presence with our new website  and social media https://www.facebook.com/spokanepharmacy.

The SPA board met at our winter retreat this weekend to discuss the upcoming year. It is important to all of us that we are meeting the needs of the local pharmacy community to advance patient care through CE, promotion of competency and increasing the awareness of the pharmacy profession contribution to the health of the community.

You will receive a request to fill out an electronic survey in the near future. It is hoped that you will take the opportunity to provide input on ways that you can be better served by the association. Your ideas and suggestions are most welcome.

I would like to bring to your attention an opportunity to promote the profession through the Patient Access to Pharmacists’ Care Coalition through the link above. They are looking for pharmacists and pharmacies who are interested in advocacy work in support of pharmacist provider status.

Thank you for the excellent work that you do every day!

Chris Greer

WSPA 2014 Salary Survey

From our colleagues at WSPA:

Greetings!

I am reaching out to you today to invite you to complete the 2014 Salary Survey.  This survey helps employers calibrate salaries as well as aids pharmacy professionals during salary discussions. Everyone who completes the survey has the opportunity to win a $100 Amazon gift card.

All pharmacy employees are welcome to complete the survey. You do not need to be a pharmacist, a technician or a WSPA member.

Access the survey by visiting: http://www.formstack.com/forms/?1278975-penTjCnEML

The survey asks about income, hours, practice settings and more. It takes less than 10 minutes to complete and is anonymous. Names and email addresses for the gift card drawing will be collected separately, and will not be linked to responses.

Please complete the survey by December 8th to have your results included.

We encourage you to share this email with co-workers, friends, staff, etc!  The more responses, the better the results. Watch the WSPA website for the survey results in January.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you in advance for participating!

A Provider Status Milestone

Please follow this link to a statement from Paul Abramowitz, CEO of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Things are moving rapidly toward greater access to pharmacist care, through massive efforts like these to promote “provider status;” a recognition that pharmacists are powerful and important members of the health care team.

Also take a look at our provider status page, highlighting efforts at WSU and at the Washington state level. They have put together many tools to help people get involved. https://spokanepharmacy.org/provider-status/
